Getting Started Doesn’t Have to be the Hardest Part

If there’s one thing I see again and again in my work: people believe getting started will be the hardest, most overwhelming part of the process. The irony? Once they begin, they’re almost always surprised by how manageable, and even enjoyable, it actually feels.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve turned “starting” into a much bigger problem than it needs to be.

We build it up in our minds. We imagine hours of exhausting decisions, emotional overwhelm, and a result that feels impossibly far away. We tell ourselves we need a full free week, more energy, better systems, or the “right time.” So we wait. And while we wait, the task grows heavier. Not because it actually is, but because of the space it takes up in our thoughts.

This doesn’t just apply to organizing. It shows up in all kinds of areas—starting a new habit, tackling a project, making a change. But in the home, the hesitation can feel particularly heavy. Our belongings carry stories, memories, and sometimes even guilt. Goodness! No wonder we hesitate!

But here’s what I gently remind my clients: you don’t need to solve everything today. You just need to begin. One of my favourite quips is: How do you eat an elephant? … One bite at a time. If you break something down into just a little step, taking the first one isn’t so intimidating!

And, the moment you take that first step: pulling a few items from your closet, sorting a single drawer, making one small decision, you interrupt the cycle of overthinking. Action replaces anticipation, and more often than not, that little action brings a sense of relief and starts the positive momentum rolling.

I’ve seen clients go from “I don’t even know where to start” to “Oh…this isn’t as bad as I thought” within the first 20 minutes. Why does this happen? Because reality is almost always kinder than the story of the giant elephant we tell ourselves beforehand.

Getting started doesn’t require perfection. It doesn’t require a perfectly planned system or a perfectly clear schedule. It simply requires a willingness to begin, even in a small way.

And sometimes, having a bit of guidance, support and accountability can make that first step even easier.

For those who are curious about a more structured approach, the KonMari Method offers a gentle, proven way to begin your tidying. Created by Marie Kondo, this method starts with clothing for a reason: it’s often the easiest category to build decision-making confidence and momentum.

Working with a certified KonMari Consultant can give you the opportunity to experience this approach in a supportive, focused way. Rather than tackling your entire home at once, you can begin with just your wardrobe and learn how to identify what truly “sparks joy” and let go of what no longer serves you.

It’s a practical way to explore the method, gain clarity, and see real results, all without the pressure of a complete tidying festival (a whole home declutter and tidy).

Sometimes, a small, guided start is all it takes to create meaningful change. That’s why I’m excited to introduce a new offering this season: The Spring Closet Edit.

This small-group experience is designed to help you move past that initial barrier and into real, tangible progress with support every step of the way. Over the course of three evenings on Zoom, we’ll work together to refresh your wardrobe in a way that feels focused, doable, and even a little bit fun. (I promise!!)

The first two sessions (held on back-to-back evenings) will guide you through decluttering and organizing your clothing. You’ll make decisions with clarity, create space, and begin shaping a wardrobe that truly works for you.

Then, about a week later, we’ll reconnect for a follow-up session. This is where we refine. We’ll troubleshoot anything that felt challenging, adjust systems if needed, and make sure everything is working smoothly in your day-to-day life.

The group will be intentionally small (maximum of five participants), creating a supportive and personalized environment where you can ask questions, share wins, and stay motivated.

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to tackle your closet, this could be it.

Because the truth is, the hardest part isn’t the organizing itself, it’s deciding to begin.

And once you do, you might just find yourself wondering why you waited so long.

I’d love to help you take that first step.
